What the hell is all this Niche talk about?

So you’ve heard the word niche being used by biz mamas and biz peeps but you’re not really certain on what they are talking about and why it’s so important, let alone how it applies to your business or growing blog...

Simply put, a niche is the specific angle you apply to any particular area of interest. It’s like zooming into the nitty gritty area of a certain space.

Once you know what a niche is, you can them begin to understand the concept of ‘niching down’.

Niching down refers to zooming in even further and allows you to find a unique focus area and will allow you to attract a very targeted audience.

To help illustrate this a bit, I’ve created some super sexy hand drawn diagrams to show the concept of starting out with a broader topic and then niching down towards a very targeted centre where it starts to get super specific!

The Dog Niche

  • Dog
  • Dog Training
  • Training a specific breed
  • Training a specific breed underwater!

Ok, let's try this again with something more realistic.

Home Interiors Niche

  • Home interiors
  • Home decor
  • Prints
  • Kids prints
  • Baby room prints
  • Baby room prints between the ages of 9 to 12

Starting to get interesting hey :)

Let's try it out with Mums With Hustle

Mums With Hustle Niche

  • Women in online business
  • Online Mumpreneurs
  • Startup online Mumpreneurs

Niching down is very important for people wanting to stand apart from others in their space. It follows that principal “If you cater to everybody, you reach no body”. Get specific and attract your tribe.

Niching down will curate and classify the types of customers/readers/people you attract to your biz. It’s much easier to have success in a niched biz than it is in a biz that “does it all”. Why?It’s like quality control. By having your niche tight you will attract a quality audience and when it comes time to grow your email list or get followers of your social media to become readers of your blog or customers of your products, you will find that quality trumps quantity. This is certainly the case for most of our guests on the MWH Podcast. Louise Glendon, of Click Love Grow, is a fabulous example! Louise was able to put a unique spin on the content she delivered and how she presented her content.

Let’s apply the niching down process to Louise Gledon’s biz, Click Love Grow:

Keen to see how far you have niched down?

Why not have a go at the niching down exercise to see where your biz/blog fits in a specific area. Could you get any more specific to really help set yourself apart from others in your niche? What unique angle could you take so that you become the go-to authority on that subject or product? When you really narrow down, you can filter out all of those other ideas that flood your mind about what you could be doing and you can begin to have laser focus on one or two areas, allowing you to streamline your work and make sure it goes deep rather than spreading wide and coming across as scattered and random. You’ll have way more success in reaching your targeted audience and it will be far easier to build trust and authority in a niched area than it is to in a broader area.
